Call for Paper: Improved subsurface understanding to advance Net Zero Emission energy production (NZEEP)

This special issue aims to advance scientific understanding of subsurface fluid flow processes, especially advancing net-zero-emission energy production and storage. Increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations from industrial processes have initiated climate changes with dire consequences. To maintain energy supply, quality of life and technological advances in a sustainable manner, it is agreed that a net zero, or even negative, carbon emission society is needed. Solutions offered by the subsurface such as carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), hydrogen and geothermal energy storage within a sustainable system have been proposed to enable more carbon neutral petroleum production, a diversified energy mix and support a gradual transition to more renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

This special issue invites original research articles as well as comprehensive review articles addressing improved subsurface understanding to advance Net Zero Emission energy production. Potential topics of this special issue mainly include, but are not limited to:

  • Experimental and numerical studies at different scales
  • Geothermal and hydrogen energy storage and production
  • Carbon dioxide storage and its potential coupled with geothermal extraction
  • Fundamental experimental measurements (wettability, reactivity, hysteresis, diffusion, trapping mechanisms, rock strength)
  • Reservoir characterization for fluid storage and energy production
  • Cyclic and intermittent processes
  • Fluid trapping and leakage assessment
  • Depleted petroleum reservoirs, saline aquifers and salt formations

  • All submitted papers must be clearly written in excellent English and contain only original work, which has not been published by or is currently under review for any other journals. All papers will be peer-reviewed according to the reviewing policy of AGER. This is virtual special issue, in which all accepted papers will be published immediately. Requests for additional information should be addressed to the guest editors.

  • Guidelines for preparation of manuscript is highly recommended befor your submission. Papers should be submitted via online submission system. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for consideration for this special issue, it is important that authors select VSI: NZEEP as the ‘Article Type’ during the submission process.
